First Presbyterian Church & Literacy

a partnership begins

In 2008 First Presbyterian Church of Tyler entered into a partnership with the Literacy Council of Tyler (LCOT).
The first step was a GED program for youth administered by the Literacy Council of Tyler, which opened in
August 2008 and is currently serving some 175 students annually to obtain their GED.About 40 students
meet every weekday in the rooms on the 1st floor of the Education Wing.

About a year later the partnership expanded with an Adult ESL program. This program, which began
in August 2009, is now serving some 150 students annually with about 75 each weekday morning.

In early 2010 the Literacy Council received a grant to offer a GED class for about 15 adults. These
adults meet in our facility each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday night. Soon a second adult GED class
will be added to this program.

Since its start in 2008 the partnership between First Presbyterian Church, Tyler and LCOT has grown
to serve approximately 130 Tyler residents on a daily basis. With this additional adult GED class
that number will increase to approximately 150, expanding this outreach program even further and
strengthening FPC Tyler's commitment to educate those around us.
